Back Burner

Minutes

New

Moderator and Secretary - no volunteers. Trae to moderate meeting, Shirley to take minutes.
Reviewed minutes from December 10th meeting. Approved by membership.

Upcoming Events

  • UAB Sponsored RoboCamp
    • UAB has approved Steven Wyss & Mark Gillette to run a two week robotics camp in June freshman and junior high school students.
    • It is conditional on our finishing the renovation work with in the space and having required labs ready for use (target date - March).
    • UAB has scheduled & will be paying facilitators. Will be a paid camp. Will expose quite a few people to the space.

All present in favor. Key logistical issues need to be solved.

Projects

  • Projects (John Rhymes)- we are approved for tour of Alabama Power's Plant Miller - no date yet.
  • Ad in Magic City Choral Society program (Lynette Pope) was effective - Shirley reported two new class alert signup page additions.
  • John Rhymes - we have made contact with the Alabama Historical Radio Society and have linked to each other's web sites. They have introductory electronics classes running at their workshop, and I see potential for collaboration.
  • New project - Chris and Trae have got a check out monitor mounted into the kiosk desk in the current Print Lab/Library.
    • Need to walk through set up with space members once OS and software installed.
  • Russell Holcombe - call for interested volunteers for formed concrete counter pour in his basement - first week of January. WIll post details on the Meetup page closer to date.

JC - is going to take the surplus computer cases at back of space to Technical Knockout for recycling.

Community outreach update

  • Shirley has posted half of the posters she wanted to get up on coffee shop, library and community center bulletin boards. If JC and Lynette have time, they will finish the list of locations.

Grant writers update

  • John Rhymes is going to lead our application to Alabama Power's application

Lab host updates

  • Nomination for Print Lab Host - John Rhymes. Vote to be taken at next meeting.

Approvals of funding

Steven Wyss - starting a money pool for a kitchen stove. Please contact him to contribute. The more is in the money pool, the better the stove we can acquire.
Wifi router - Chris Lais says new one will be $60. John, Steven and Trae committed to pay $20 each towards a new one. Purchase approved, router ordered.

Donations

Acknowledgement of Curl family equipment and gear gifts from their parent's family home - proposal by Shirley that we consider naming a lab in their honor. Counter proposal from other attending members that we add plaques or labels to key donated equipment to acknowledge source as naming labs could become unwieldy. Decision made to add and acknowledge Curl family on a RMM website sponsor page.
    • The Curl family donated (by allowing RMM members to come in to their parents' house and select items that would be of use to the space):
      • Friday afternoon
        • 3 work benches and all tools contained went onto Bill Hudson's trailer.
        • Loaned - electric grinder (BIll Hudson donated in exchange for the mounted ones coming out of Curl workshop)
        • All materials in Bill's backyard, covered by tarp.
      • Saturday afternoon
        • Multiple items pulled
          • Exhaust fan
          • 35 mm cameras & lenses (Russell)
          • Lynette to clean up to ensure working - for use by middle schoolers at the space
          • All gear to be documented with a wiki page when it enters the space.
          • Electrical cords
          • Storage containers
          • Small hand tools
          • Painting equipment
          • Ironing board
          • MIrror

Lab updates

  • Photo Lab - incoming gear stashed in one of the spare rooms.
    • Russ Frazier, local photographer is willing to help with Photo Lab set-up.
  • Fiber Lab - Celeste has purchased parts necessary to repair the big Loom. All the looms need work to be made functional (balancing, tension adjustments) Lynette will help.
  • Time to start a photo gallery in the halls. Shirley to help JC after the December 30th.
  • Computer Lab - Chris swapped out the router on Red Mountain Makers with one from his home as a temporary patch.
    • Some of the computers in the lab have bad capacitors - repairs in progress. Some will shut down prematurely.
    • Library - kiosk monitor works, kiosk computer in progress.
    • JC and Lynette to assist under Chris's supervision. Also to put together cost estimates to bring in new machines. Needed for grant proposals.
