Minutes

Upcoming Events

  • Proposal for Pi Day as an annual group celebration day on March 14th.
    • Shirley will organize.
  • Winter-een-mas (last week of January) also proposed by JC. A bit late to organize much for this year.
    • Start with making time this year to visit the other gaming groups?
  • Woodlawn Business Association Meeting, Tuesday, January 27th, 8:30 am at Social Venture.
    • Shirley, Celeste and Steven will attend.
  • Upcoming Cherry Blossom festival at Birmingham Botanical Garden - is this a good fit for the group? Steven will be attending. Invites other members and makers to join him and his wife.
  • Free School classes for 2015
    • Anyone interested in teaching a class should contact Steph.

Projects

  • Shawn proposed getting display ready for Light Dreams (May 8 - 10th) and for Cherry Blossom festival at Birmingham Botanical Garden. At this point, this consists of adding lights to Allison the Dinosaur and the Clever Girl. Open to suggestions for additional projects/work.
  • JC and Steven Wyss are going to design and build a bead sorter for JC's plastic beads. Project work day will be every second Friday, announced via Meetup. The goal is to have a working "bead printer" to speed the creation of iconography and artwork.
  • Steven Wyss is going to start experimenting with silver casting using a combination of lost wax or lost ABS casting. Anyone who is interested taking part/learning should contact him directly.
  • Knox Franklin is working on a one color 8 x 8 x 8 LED cube with control by row. Lynette is going to follow along and learn. Shirley is also interested.
    • Steven Wyss is doing an individually addressable 6 x 6 x 6 RGB LED hex cube.
  • Steph and Nicole Jordan removed the residual glue (left by old tiles and carpet) from Bio Lab and (the next door room) floor. They are looking a vent hood. Anyone who knows of an available one should contact them. Possible sources include:
    • Auction source - will probably go for cheap.
    • UAB. Steven noted that hoods that are being pulled out are usually taken by other labs because new equipment is expensive.
    • To be vented out through existing venting that leads to the basement coal shute.
  • Concrete floor cleaning - Lynette suggested renting equipment to do all remaining rooms in one go. Most cost effective method.
  • Shirley is relearning Javascript in order to create the space class registration system. Welcomes anyone who wishes to join her in the project.

Lab host update

JC (front room host) has cleaned up the front room. Anything that was on or under tables is now back in the old kitchen area where the computer pile used to be. If you left things in the front room, they can be found there.
  • As we've been building the group infrastructure, writing group documentation and grant proposals, we have been many times to provide our written anti-harassment policy and anti-discrimination policies. We drafted language last summer, but didn't finish the task. We need to provide it for a current grant application.Feedback is requested on the following proposed language. Please send any suggested language changes to Trae.
  • Call for Board nominations for Board member-at-large, Chair and Vice Chair. Please send your nominations to Trae or bring them to the next maker's meeting, February 1st.
Annual General Meeting, Board election and Potluck Party February 8t
  • Final financial report for 2014
  • Report on our activities
  • Presentation and discussion of plans (to date) for 2015.

New

  • Tech Birmingham report
Shirley has bought a Tech Birmingham membership. We now have an information conduit. Aside from a job posting board and not being charged for individual events, Shirley didn't see a need for us to take out a non-profit membership ($500!) until later in the year when our cash flow and facilities are better established.
  • Incorporating "cooperative" into the mission statement
Trae pointed out that RMM is following a cooperative organizational model. Many individuals and other organizations have assumed that we are providing a service, when we don't. We need to clarify what we do.
This is to clarify that we are not a service. "Tech Coop" is a friendlier term than hackerspace and will allow us to differentiate ourselves from other makerspaces developing in the city.
  • Collaboration with Lillis Taylor, Artist in Residence at Alys Stephens Center
RMM has formed a partnership with Lillis Taylor, the Artist in Residence with the Institute for Arts in Medicine
We will help build and assemble the toolkits for the DART project.
  • Two of Steven Wyss's friends, who run The Bead Biz in Helena, are interested in running a initial in-city jewelry class at the space.
Some discussion as to how to price use of the space. Shirley referred back to initial structure discussed during group founding. To be reviewed and compared to other city groups' pricing structures for space use.

Old

  • Purchase of Will Daniel's old oscilloscope for the Circuits Lab - $200.00. Similar model is $400 new. (WIll had determined that all the donated oscilloscopes were not easily repairable).
    • Members present at the meeting committed to raise the sum. Send to James Nylen directly at paypal.com.
  • As we've been building the group infrastructure, writing group documentation and grant proposals, we have been requested to provide our written anti-harassment policy and anti-discrimination policies by our insurance company and potential grant sources. We drafted language last summer, but didn't finish the task. We need to provide it for a current grant application. Feedback is requested on the following proposed language. Please send any suggested language changes to Trae.
