space critera

posted from the 2013-01-08 and 2013-07-30 planning meeting

  • roughly under 750$ to start
  • water/sewer (must have toilet main)
  • electricity (connected fuse box with at least a 100 amp line) (disconnected box ok if electrical is extensive)
  • secure door and windows (metal door, caged or block windows) (small windows ok to cage ourselves)
  • secure roof- no leaks, not easily breached
  • option for heat annd cool.
  • outdoor space/parking
  • garage door or double door
  • street level
  • Range: jones valley basin from arkedelphia to 60th St. preferably closest to downtown Bham.
  • Lease options
    • 6 month lease. if investment is needed into the space an option to rent for a year+ afterward is beneficial
    • month to month with little investment needed
    • 1year+ lease with escalating rent, great location, and promising space

5504 First Avenue North

I would suggest that someone make a meeting with my landlord. "Andrew Morrow" He is young and is interested in community activities such as this. He is on board with letting some of us rent out a space for a venue/ studio. And he is pretty reasonable. We havent got said space, but in early talks we suggested that we do the lionshare of the work of turning a space into a livable and workable space, for less rent. -Rodney 4/12/12

he's on vacation for a week. still havnt emaiiled him. he's nearly offered to share his workshop with us in woodlawn. but i'm more interested in what else he may have in woodlawn. Wikiadmin 23:24, 31 July 2013 (CDT)
Here is what he showed me. I think this is a top tier choice. would be a temporary arrangement until 6 months then both the landlord and us can reassess.Wikiadmin (talk) 20:23, 25 August 2013 (CDT)
2,500-5000sqft depending on whether the space is split in half or not. aprox $200 per month plus aprox $300? in ultilities + Miles J. estimates over $500 in electrical building costs. Andrew also has another open warehouse space in woodlawn that may be an option. Trae (talk) 20:46, 31 August 2013 (CDT)

Building L

This is a 6 month temporary space in the back of the Continental Gin complex in crestwood, being rented by bruce of makebhm before starting his for-profit workshop in avondale. The space is removed from the street in the back of the complex and has night security.Trae (talk) 20:46, 31 August 2013 (CDT)

  • 6 months sharing space with MakeBhm equipment, and yellowhammer screenprinters
  • requires MakeBhm membership but payment will be made through our own dues
  • roughly $250-$300 or more including utilities and insurance
  • see the makebhm section below

4023 1st Avenue North

  • 300 month to month
  • Street can be busy during rush hour
  • Need to confirm if parking allowed on street in front of location
  • Business hour parking for four cars on a good day at rear
  • Autobody shops to rear of site off of Morris Ave can be used for parking after hours.
  • may have flooded during storm drain overflow?
  • neighbors say crime is not a problem Trae (talk) 20:46, 31 August 2013 (CDT)

  • includes two bathrooms and circuit breaker
  • estimated 7 months till renovated
  • rent $1.25/sqft
  • the vision of what the space will be has swung drastically from a gym membership for profit makerspace with incubator rental space to a different model wich is entirely rental space for different workshop groups. I have yet to get a certain idea of the plan or the mission. the location and the collusion of assets is promising though.
